Welcome to Spud Comics

Wednesday, November 19th, 2008

Hey, thanks for dropping by. This is my first blog entry, so it’s kind of a test to see how all this works. Most of you will probably not remember me, but I had a webcomic about two years ago called “Monkey Butler” (if you do remember, then WOW!) I had to quit doing it because other obligations got in the way (that’s a nicer way of saying “having kids”), but I missed it so much that I decided to take another swing at it with a series of single panel cartoons. My CSS skills are a little…lacking, but I hope to fix all of this up really soon.

Day Two Down

I think I’m getting to where I’m liking what’s going on with this site. I’ve changed the background color like twelve times! If there are any new readers here, I would appreciate your input and thoughts on the site. And if there are any other cartoonists lurking around I would also appreciate your advice if you feel so inclined. With everyone’s criticisms (even the harsh ones) this thing can only get better!

I have a sneaking suspicion that I’m going to look back on these comics and hate myself for ever posting them. Oh, well, got to keep going. Since this is Friday I probably won’t have any comics up this weekend. But when Monday rolls around I should have better stuff ready to go. I’m still working out the bugs.

Bolt and Voices

Monday, November 24th, 2008

Saw “Bolt” with the kids this weekend (I guess I should let you know I have three children; two boys and a girl). It’s cute in that Disney sort of way. And like most Disney films it’s all about dealing with an identity crisis (see also: Toy Story, The Little Mermaid, Cinderella, The Jungle Book, The Lion King, The Fox and The Hound, etc.). I have a deep obsession with cartoon voice-overs, so of course I knew that John Travolta was the title character and Miley Hannah Cyrus Montana Sue was Penny, Bolt’s owner/co-star. I’m usually pretty good with pairing the voice to the actor. I’ll turn to my wife and whisper, “You know who that is, right? That’s so-and-so.” I have about a 93% accuracy rating. Yesterday I fell in that 7 percentile.

I could swear that the voice of Rhino, the hamster was Patton Oswalt, only because it has that certain, nerdy quality. I remembered thinking that he was going to be typecast as playing animated rodents (he was in Ratatouille). Well, I was surprised to find out not only was I wrong about him, but I was wrong about some of the other cast members as well. I HATE when that happens.

The last time was with “The Incredibles”, when I thought the voice of Mr. Incredible was Harrison Ford for a moment. When I found out it was Craig T. Nelson I slapped my head and shouted “Of course!”

My favorite cast of voice actors are from “Spongebob Squarepants”. Just listen to how they interpret classic movies:

Hang in There

Friday, November 28th, 2008

I really am working hard on this website, I swear. Although starting a webcomic just before a holiday probably wasn’t one of my brightest ideas. I’m reading and listening to all I can to make Spudcomics a part of your daily routine.

I mostly create these cartoons at my full time job, where I’m a graphic artist, but now I’m starting to set things up at home and getting all of this ready. So, like everything else that’s just starting out it’s trial and error.

Hope you’re having a great holiday weekend!
